UF’s Graduate Human Language Technology (HLT) Certificate provides a general background for students interested in pursuing further education or employment related to Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing , and Human Language Technology. Find it in the graduate catalog here.

The Graduate HLT Certificate requirements have two parts: (I) Computational Requirements and (II) Elective Requirements. Options differ depending on whether students are inside or outside the Linguistics graduate degree program:

I. Computational Requirements:
Requirement 1: LIN 6932 Programming for Linguists (Special Topics) (3 credits, letter graded)
Requirement 2: LIN 5770 Introduction to Computational Linguistics (3 credits, letter graded)

For students outside the major, requirement (2) may be met with a course in Natural Language Processing, including CAI 6307 or CISE 6930 Spoken Dialogue Systems. Alternative courses must be approved by the Linguistics Department.

II. Elective Requirements:
Students inside the major must take two additional courses (6 credits) in computational linguistics and natural language processing. Options include:
LIN 6932 All Computational Models are Wrong (Special Topics) (3 credits; letter graded)
LIN 6007 Statistics for Linguists (3 credits; letter graded)
LIN 6932 Other Special Topics approved by the Linguistics Department (3 credits; letter graded)
Related courses outside the department may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Students outside the major must take two additional language structure courses (6 credits). Options include:
LIN 6501 Syntax 1 (3 credits; letter grade)
LIN 6323 Phonology 1 (3 credits; letter grade)
LIN 6402 Morphology 1 (3 credits; letter grade)
LIN 6208 Phonetics for Linguists (3 credits; letter grade)
LIN 6932 Structure of Language X (Special Topics) (3 credits; letter grade)
Other linguistic structure courses approved by the Linguistics department.

Prerequisites:
No special prerequisites are required except those of the required courses. For students outside the major who have not taken LIN 2011 Introduction of Linguistics, an entrance exam must be completed to test background linguistic knowledge. This ensures students have the relevant background to take LIN language structure courses. Example questions and a study guide will be made available on the department website.
